The family of Savannah Guthrie is said to be actively exploring possible legal action following controversial remarks made by TV host Ashleigh Banfield — comments that have sent shockwaves through an already sensitive missing-person investigation.
According to multiple insiders, tensions escalated after Banfield publicly suggested that Nancy Guthrie’s son-in-law could be a “prime suspect” in the disappearance of the 84-year-old — a claim authorities have firmly denied.
The Allegation That Sparked Outrage
The controversy began during an episode of Banfield’s show Drop Dead Serious, where she alleged that investigators had seized a vehicle belonging to Savannah’s sister, Annie, and that it was connected to Annie’s husband, Tommaso Cioni.
Banfield went on to imply that Cioni was being treated as a suspect in Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, though she later stressed that her statements were “musings, not evidence.”
Behind the scenes, those comments reportedly caused deep distress within the Guthrie family.
“You can’t float accusations like that and then hide behind disclaimers,” one insider said. “It dragged innocent people into a nightmare.”
Police Push Back — And Everything Shifts
Days later, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department issued a firm public statement rejecting Banfield’s claims. Authorities confirmed that no suspects or persons of interest have been identified and criticised the spread of “unverified accusations,” calling them “irresponsible.”
“That statement changed everything,” a source close to the family revealed. “Once police publicly pushed back, the family felt real harm had been done.”
While no lawsuit has been filed, consultations with legal experts are reportedly underway.
Banfield Refuses to Back Down
Despite the backlash, Banfield has doubled down. Speaking to Status, she insisted she stands by her reporting — as does her source — claiming she has consulted them repeatedly in recent days.
“I stand by my reporting,” she said. “Nothing has changed.”
She reiterated that she only said the individual “may” be a prime suspect, arguing she made no definitive accusation.
However, several journalists are said to be deeply uneasy with the situation. One reporter was blunt: “At a certain point, building an audience on speculation around a missing 84-year-old woman — who happens to be the mother of a former colleague — crosses a line. It’s hurting the family and potentially the investigation.”
Where the Case Stands Now
Nancy Guthrie vanished earlier this month after being last seen at her Tucson home. When family members arrived, they found her phone, wallet and keys — but no sign of her.
Her home was declared a crime scene, and blood was discovered inside. While alleged ransom notes surfaced, one was later confirmed to be fake, leading to an arrest unrelated to the disappearance.
As of now, Nancy Guthrie remains missing, and investigators say the case is ongoing — with no arrests and no named suspects.
For her family, the focus remains on finding answers — and protecting those already caught in the crossfire of public speculation.
