Coronation Street fans have uncovered what ‘ping’ means after David Platt was ‘pinged’ by newcomer Ben Driscoll.
Last week, Ben (Aaron McCusker) made his debut on the ITV soap, rocking up with former resident Eva Price (Catherine Tyldesley) after Ben surprised her by buying her the Rovers Return.
The couple wasted no time in settling into the pub and welcomed all the regulars with a huge Halloween party. However, no stranger to a neighbour feud, David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) ended up clashing with rugby player Ben.
Keen to cause some trouble, David headed into the back of the Rovers and took Ben’s precious rugby ball before heading out to the bar to throw it around.
Just as David was about to throw it, Ben walked over and ‘pinged’ David, by tapping his forehead and saying: “Ping!” Fellow pub-goers were left in hysterics as David looked around totally baffled. He said: “Ping? Ping?! What’s Ping?!”
Winding David up, nobody informed him, and it was clear it was still bothering him days after the Halloween party ended. So much so, he went back to the Rovers and quizzed Ben and Eva about it.
“That thing that you did in here, the pointing thing,” David said, before Eva clarified: “Oh you mean when he pinged you!” She added with a cheeky smile: “Just means he likes you!”
Not believing her, an unimpressed David replied: “What putting his finger on my forehead in front of all my friends and neighbours.” Things then escalated when David stole Ben’s rugby shirt as payback, leaving Ben fuming.
What’s more, it’s fair to say the ‘ping’ joke sent viewers into a frenzy with plenty left baffled by what it means. However, some fans are certain that they know the ‘real meaning’ behind the joke.
On a Corrie Facebook fan forum, one person suggested it could be something to do with rugby. They wrote: “Tried to look it up and AI (so trust that or not as you like) said that the term ping in rugby is slang for being penalised by the referee for an infringement of the rules. So if that’s right at least it makes sense in context but it is a bit obscure.”
However, someone else noted: “It’s not deep, he was basically just flicking him away like he’s a small inconvenience, making him look a bit daft in front of everyone.” A third chimed in: “It was also a way to distract him to get his ball back.” Another also mused: “I think he was just being funny.”
