The Maze Runner films began with people trying to survive a giant, man-made maze, filled with traps and monsters, ready to kill them. The films explored the existence of the maze and outside, where the creators of it rule over a post-apocalyptic Earth. We followed the protagonist, Thomas, as he gathered allies and saved his friends from an evil organization known as WCKD.

What Will the New Maze Runner Be About?

Ever since the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney in March 2019, Disney announced shortly that they have plans to make more Maze Runner films. It wasn’t until May 2024 that we heard news from it again that Wes Ball will be returning as a producer and Jack Paglen as the writer. They described the plans for the new installment as not a reboot or a direct sequel to the trilogy; instead, it is in the same continuity.

And even more scoop about this news we received recently, in October 2025, that industry insider Daniel Ritchman leaked a bit of information about the plans Disney has for the future of the Maze Runner franchise. He claimed that the story will be a standalone film, but will take place in the same universe, and that the lead roles are all new faces, not recasting those from the original trilogy.

Even after over a decade since it was first introduced to the world, there are still plenty of fans out there who would love to see more of the Maze Runner. And now, with the plans in place for a new movie in the franchise, this is a good time for both fans and people who are interested in watching the new movie without having the need to watch the original trilogy.
