Steve Fletcher, who has been part of The Repair Shopsince it began back in 2017, was blown away by the item he was tasked to fix.

During the latest episode of the BBC show (April 29), viewers saw Steve alongside Sonnaz Nooranvary inspect the item that had been brought in.

Looking at it on the table, Sonnaz commented: “I’m no builder, but needless to say, this looks like it’s seen much better days.” Agreeing, Steve replied: “Yeah, I’ve done up old buildings, and I don’t think any of them were as bad as this.”

Entering the barn was Darn Shrives from West Sussex, who joked the experts were looking at “ruins” before detailing that it was a remarkable model watermill which was built by her late father in 1996.

She shared: “He put it all together to go in front of our family home to replicate the red brickwork of the house. Every little brick he made by hand, individually, he wanted it to be a working watermill. Obviously, the years of it sitting on the ground, outside, the weather had gotten to it.”

Dawn explained that her father’s intention was to put an underground chamber so that the watermill would turn. Sadly, he died in 2014, and her mother downsized their family home.

She stated that now her mother lives in a bungalow, there’s nothing to remind her of her late husband, highlighting the importance of the watermill model.

Dawn added: “He’s touched, every single piece of this. He’s crafted this, and she looks out her front window and sees this deteriorating; it’s just so sad to see.

“So to have it brought back to life for the family, for mum, would just be amazing. Just to see it put back together and whole again, I think, is almost- we can’t even think of that.” As Steve explained, he would do his best to fix the model, it was clear he had his work cut out for him.

In the end, after creating bricks to replace what Dawn’s father had made, Steve managed to successfully bring the depleted model back to life and got water added to make the wheel turn as her father had intended all those years ago.

When it was time to show Dawn the finished result, she brought along her mother, Pam, to see the model. The two women were instantly brought to tears when it was unveiled, astonished by what Steve had managed to do.

Pam immediately thanked Steve as Dawn said: “Look at that! Isn’t that lovely?” Pam added: “Gosh, that’s amazing. You’ve done all of these (roof tiles). Gosh, thank you.”

As they spotted that the house had water surrounding it, Steve turned it for the first time, showing them the watermill in action. She commented: “It’s just beyond anything that we could’ve thought would ever happen to it, thank you.”

Speaking to the camera, Dawn added: “The watermill just sums up a legacy that will now stay in the family, be preserved, and dad would be so pleased to know that it’s working and it’s loved and it’s still loved.” Pam added: “It’s just the best thing we could have done, isn’t it?”
