Here at GH, we’re suckers for a crime drama – whether that means cosy crime or something a little more gritty. So, when we found Acorn TV’s Signora Volpe – a blend of The Madame Blanc Mysteries and The Night Manager – we were more than excited. It’s the British spy series packed with so many twists and turns that it’ll keep you guessing – oh, and it’s got Silent Witness star Emilia Fox as the lead!

If you’re yet to catch up on series 1 and 2 of Signora Volpe, here’s a (spoiler-free!) rundown. Emilia Fox plays disillusioned former spy Sylvia ‘Signora Volpe’ Fox who visits Italy to attend a wedding. Once over there, she finds herself in the midst of a puzzling murder case involving local crime and ancient secrets – and she can’t help but get involved. The second instalment finds Sylvia settled in Umbria and drawn into more local mysteries, including the death of a respected local figure at his very own charity event. Mysterious indeed!

What is Signora Volpe about?

Moris Puccio/AcornTV

As we mentioned, the three-part series 1 of Signora Volpe introduces us to titular ex-MI6 operative Sylvia ‘Signora Volpe’ Fox, who makes a move to Italy after feeling disillusioned with her job. There, at the wedding of her niece, she finds that things turn tense when a body is discovered in the lake behind the groom’s house. Turning sleuth in an instant, Sylvia digs into the case, finding ties to a local Umbrian mob.

In series 2, Sylvia is settled in Italy but can’t help being drawn to local mysteries once again. She’s investigating murder and going on undercover missions – all while navigating family dynamics and a whirlwind romance. Then there’s the fact that she gets abducted and is forced to rely on her own instincts to survive. Will her family manage to save her?

We’ll be getting even more stunning Italian countryside and twisty drama! The three-part series will see Sylvia physically and mentally recovering from her shocking kidnap and attempting to enjoy her life in Italy. But she’s still awaiting answers from her ex-husband, Adam Haines (Jamie Bamber), who appears to have some past dealings with her abductors. Then she has her own investigations to be getting on with – the murder of a local winery and a young man found dead in the bed of a couple who claim not to know him – all while she’s working through issues in her deepening relationship with police captain Giovanni Riva (Giovanni Cirfiera). Plus, there’s the violent death of someone close to her to contend with. It’s fair to say she has her hands full!
