While she was dealing with legitimate issues as she got closer to California “Cal” Jones (Chad Michael Murray), their relationship was just one piece of the puzzle for Maggie’s story. Maggie and Cal’s time together was tough to watch at moments, as she became a more difficult part of his story throughout the season. Despite the difficulties, Maggie was less of an issue than Cal.
As Maggie’s personality has been teased out over the course of the last three seasons, it’s become clear she has quirks that don’t necessarily work for viewers. Maggie’s uncertainties have caused issues throughout the series, and her inability to hold strong on a decision has only been underscored by her consistent lack of emotion when it comes to her problems.
While Maggie and Cal’s stories don’t necessarily feel like they’re finished, especially with the lead up to Sullivan’s Crossing season 4 building to viewers finding out more information about Maggie’s secret marriage, it’s clear that the show needs to take a different route. Regardless of whether the show continues to keep up with Maggie, the series needs to refocus on someone new.
Maggie’s Characterization Hasn’t Been Working For Sullivan’s Crossing Viewers
Her Indecisive Lack Of Emotions Has Left Viewers Unmoved
Rather than being able to figure out where she stands when it comes to her family and friends in Boston and Timberlake alike, Maggie’s continuously struggled to figure out what she wants or where she stands. When she does have a firm stance on something, it’s clear that she’d be able to be swayed by someone else’s opinion, should she value them.
On top of Maggie’s quick and strange relationship with Cal, her problems with her father, Harry “Sully” Sullivan (Scott Patterson), have felt long-drawn-out throughout the series. While Sully and Maggie definitely had issues to work through as they mended their relationship, her consistent lack of care for Sully was irritating early in the show. Overall, Maggie’s been somewhat insufferable all series long.
Lola’s Shift Over Sullivan’s Crossing’s Run Has Made Her More Likable
She’s Become A More Interesting Character
After growing up in Timberlake and becoming Sully’s surrogate daughter after an accident caused Sully to feel he owed her care, Lola was tough to like at the start when she felt territorial of Maggie stepping in on people she considered to be family. While Lola made her fair share of tough calls, like hiding a letter Cal left for Maggie early in the series, she’s changed.
Lola’s growth has allowed her to become more self-aware as she’s become a bigger part of the Sullivan’s Crossing universe, and as she’s grown into a better person, her story has opened up. Lola’s no longer just a piece of the puzzle at the Crossing, and instead has become a huge part of the show’s DNA in the most recent season.
Lola Stepping Into The Spotlight Could Save Sullivan’s Crossing
Her Journey Would Be More Interesting To Follow
Although some viewers likely want to stick with Cal and Maggie’s story as the focal point of the series, bringing Lola into the spotlight could be a great way to revitalize Sullivan’s Crossing season 4. After the most recent season left many fans feeling like the characterization and interactions felt forced, Lola’s story could be a way to refresh the show.
Moving away from Maggie’s story could be an interesting way to change the pace of Sullivan’s Crossing as the series continues. While both would be able to stay on the series and continue to be featured, allowing Lola to share in the spotlight a bit more wholly would shift the story in a new way. Refreshing the plot could be good for Sullivan’s Crossing.
