Stephen Graham fans, rejoice! The Adolescence star, who’s just scooped three Emmys for his impeccable part in the Netflix drama, is returning to our screens in an unsettling new thriller – and it’s set to be another masterpiece! Good Boy is the dark new film that sees Stephen star alongside MobLand’s Anson Boon as an altruistic man who captures and chains up a teenager in a bid to rehabilitate him. And it’s as chilling as it sounds, so hold on tight!
Intrigued to know more? Well, the thriller follows young hooligan Tommy (Anson Boon) – whose life consists of drugs, parties… and violence. One night, he’s captured off the street and wakes up chained to the wall in the basement of the suburban family home of Chris (Stephen Graham). The family want to help Tommy, they say, but is this really the way to do it?

What is Good Boy about?
The dark thriller follows Tommy, a 19-year-old drug-fuelled delinquent (played by Anson Boon) who’s abducted off the streets one night. He wakes up in the basement of Chris (Stephen Graham) and – alarmingly, to say the least – there’s a chain around his neck. Chris and his wife Kathryn (Andrea Riseborough) say their plan is to rehabilitate him, but Tommy is understandably unconvinced.
Good Boy comes from Oscar-nominated Polish director Jan Komasa, and the screenplay was originally written in Polish and set in Warsaw – but it’s been adapted into English and set in Yorkshire. Jan told Variety that he was immediately drawn to the off-kilter story about a young boy’s “detoxication from trash culture.” He added that there was something familiar and typically “Central and Eastern European” in its “bitter, dark sense of humour dwelling in moral grey [areas].” “I was thrilled. I was shaking. I loved it,” he said about reading the script for the first time.

How can I watch Good Boy?
The UK cinema release date for Good Boy is yet to be confirmed, although its first British screenings (which are unfortunately sold out) will be at next month’s BFI London Film Festival (on Thursday 9th October and Saturday 11th October), so we’d expect a wider cinema release soon. As soon as we have a confirmed date, we’ll share it here.

Stephen has already gifted us with two incredible dramas this year – Netflix’s Adolescence, which you can watch on the streamer here, and Disney+’s A Thousand Blows, which is set to return for a second series soon. We’d also highly recommend Help, which is available to watch on Channel 4. The one-off drama is set in a fictional Liverpool care home and features Jodie Comer as one of the carers who works there. She bonds with a patient suffering from early onset dementia (played by Graham) and when COVID-19 hits, they’re faced with horrific circumstances.
