ROCKED BY CORRIE DRAMA: SYDNEY MARTIN REVEALS THE FAMILIAR TV STARS WHO SAVED HER FROM BREAKING POINT!

Corrie Star Sydney Martin Defends Taboo Sex-Game Storyline: ‘It Takes More Pressure to Open a Can of Coke Than Cause Brain Damage!’

Coronation Street has officially broken the internet with its most controversial storyline of the year. The groundbreaking plotline—featuring teenager Betsy Swain suffering two catastrophic strokes after a consensual sex game with Dylan Wilson went wrong—has divided the nation.

While some praise the soap for its raw authenticity, others are completely gobsmacked by the terrifying medical reality, and some have even branded the dark plotline “too sordid” for pre-watershed TV.

But speaking exclusively about the massive backlash, 24-year-old breakout star Sydney Martin reveals she is absolutely thrilled that the taboo has finally been shattered.

“It’s Not Palatable for Older Generations” 🤫

Sydney knew she was stepping into a minefield when show boss Kate Brooks handed her the script last November.

“I always knew it was going to be very divided,” Sydney admits. “I know that, for the older generations, it wasn’t going to be as palatable. Negative or positive, people are talking about it, and that’s exactly the reaction we wanted.”

The actress spent months researching the issue alongside charities like Safeline, IFAS, and the Stroke Association—and the statistics she uncovered left her completely chilled to the bone.

“When I first got told about it, I learnt that it takes more pressure to open a can of Coke than it does to cause brain damage,” Sydney reveals. “There was a study where they did a blood test on 30 women—15 who had partaken and 15 who hadn’t—and the 15 who had all showed signs of brain damage. The statistics were shocking.”

Sydney notes that with 55% of young adults aged 16–34 admitting to trying strangulation during sex, the act has become dangerously normalized through modern media and unrestricted access to porn.

The Legal Time Bomb Facing Dylan ⚖️

One of the biggest shockwaves hitting viewers is the harsh legal reality facing Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne). Many fans mistakenly assumed that because the act was entirely consensual, Dylan is legally in the clear.

Think again. Even though Dylan never intended to hurt his girlfriend, under UK law, causing this level of severe injury during intimacy carries a massive prison sentence of up to five years.

Sydney admits she feels immense empathy for both characters: “There’s no bad guy in it. In both of their eyes, they’ve done no wrong. They’re just experimenting with something that seems so natural to them because of their generation. He wouldn’t intentionally hurt her, and I believe that.”

Saved by a Secret Soap Sisterhood 👭

Tackling such a heavy storyline could easily break a young actress, but Sydney reveals she has the ultimate support system. Aside from getting advice from Emmerdale legend Mark Charnock (Marlon Dingle), her real-life besties are two of the biggest award-winning stars in the soap world.

Sydney relies daily on her Corrie co-star Cait Fitton (who led Lauren Bolton’s horrific grooming plot) and Hollyoaks sensation Isabelle Smith (who blew audiences away as Frankie Dean).

“They are my biggest rocks throughout it all,” Sydney gushes. “Soap is such a unique and misunderstood world. You could be doing up to 11 scenes a day. I told them as soon as I heard in November. If I’m very hard on myself, I can just ring them, and they get it.”

To celebrate the blockbuster launch of the storyline, Sydney and her housemates huddled up in a safe space armed with a massive Victoria Sponge cake to watch the clips online.

Moving forward, viewers will watch a frustrated Betsy battle through grueling physiotherapy, all while utilizing groundbreaking, in-house facial prosthetics created by the brilliant Corrie makeup department to depict the physical reality of a stroke.

“Whether young people watch it, or parents strike up these conversations, it can really make a difference,” Sydney concludes. Love it or hate it, Betsy’s story is officially changing lives.
