If you loved the BBC’s Killing Eve or Prime Video’s The Assassin, then we’ve got a new series that you’re going to adore – and the best part is that it stars none other than one of our favourite actresses, Hannah Waddingham! Enter Ride or Die, the new spy series coming to Prime Video that sees the Ted Lasso star play an assassin on the run with her best friend (Octavia Spencer). Sounds good, right?
The upcoming series follows Judith (Hannah Waddingham), who has been covertly living a double life as a trained assassin. When she botches a job and things go awry, Judith brings her best friend Debbie (Octavia Spencer) along for the ride. The pair now have a mysterious enemy to hide from, as well a fractured relationship to repair.
Excitingly, the spy drama, which Hannah and Octavia are executive producing, is a start-studded one, featuring Bill Nighy (as The Director), Miss Austen’s Calam Lynch, and Game of Thrones’ Ed Skrein. While we wait for Ride or Die to arrive on our screens, here’s everything you need to know about the new series, including the plot, cast and how to watch it.
The eight-part series is based on an idea by writer and stand-up comedian Tessa Coates, and follows Judith (Hannah Waddingham) who has been secretly working as a highly-trained assassin. Her best friend Debbie (Octavia Spencer) is shocked to learn about Judith’s secret life as a gun-for-hire, but ends up going on the run with her to escape a mysterious enemy. As well as the dangerous situation the pair find themselves in, they need to fix their friendship, too.
Hannah Waddingham has shared how excited she is to be part of the project: “I’m not gonna lie, a few expletives fell out of my face at the prospect of working with the magnificent Ms. Spencer, Tessa Coates’ hugely energetic, exhilarating script, Skydance and Double Dream,” she said. “To then see the immediate excited response from a mighty beast like Amazon! It’s all just incredibly exciting, and I can’t wait to get our collective teeth into it!”
Head of Amazon MGM Studios, Jennifer Salke, has also shared a teaser of what’s in store in the series, which has been filmed in Prague. “We were blown away by this one-of-a-kind comedy,” she said. “Tessa [Coates]’s pitch delivered it all – fantastically original characters, a great story, the amazing creative talents of Octavia and Hannah, and so much fun. We are over the moon to work with them all plus the dream teams at Skydance, Double Dream and Orit Entertainment.”
The series reportedly triggered a major bidding war between streamers and we can see why. With strong hints of Killing Eve (who could forget Eve Polastri and Villanelle?), it’s a must-watch for fans of the show – or if you simply love a good game of cat and mouse.
