Reuben, whom Jack shares with former girlfriend Lauren Shippey alongside daughter Nyla-Rae, has officially landed a high-profile role in a major theatrical production hitting Manchester’s prestigious Royal Exchange Theatre.
🏛️ A Full-Time Job: Reuben Takes the Stage in Fun Home
Speaking candidly on his popular On the Sofa podcast to co-star Colson Smith, Jack beamed as he revealed that Reuben has been cast as “John” in the highly anticipated, award-winning musical Fun Home.
Described as a poignant, coming-of-age story centered around children growing up in a family-run funeral home, the production is locked in for an intense, month-long run. For young Reuben, entering the professional acting world has been a massive reality check.
“He’s got a part in a new musical coming to Manchester… It’s called Fun Home,” Jack shared proudly. “He’s playing one of the kids. Yeah, he’s got a part, and it’s a month run at the Royal Exchange. He is absolutely buzzing! I’ve taken him to a few of the rehearsals last weekend, and he has to be there from 10 until 5. It’s a full job!”
Taking to Instagram after opening night to officially support his son, Jack posted a glowing review while issuing a gentle content warning to fans:
“Went to see Reuben as John in Fun Home. The show runs for a month at @royalexchangemanchester—if you can, go see it. Fantastic performances, in particular Alex Young is flawless and Nigel Harman is superb… brace yourself though. It’s very emotional.”

Reuben’s theatrical breakthrough crowns an already unforgettable summer for the soap star. Just last week, Jack confirmed the peaceful home birth of his new daughter, Constance Ita Shepherd, on June 26.
Reflecting on the naming process, Jack hilariously admitted that he and Hanni bypassed traditional British names entirely, turning to global digital search engines to find a moniker with maximum sophistication.
“What you do is when you’re picking names, you Google,” Jack laughed on the podcast. “You’ll go French names, Italian names, something that’s a bit, you know, European and posh. That’s what we were thinking. We wanted something unusual, and Constance came up. It was probably the only one that we both agreed on.”
When pressed on whether they have a secret boy’s name locked away in a vault just in case they have a son in the future, Jack fiercely guarded the secret: “Yes. But I don’t want to reveal my name and have someone steal it. Even though I am fully aware there is still only one other person with it in the world!”
