King Charles strips Prince Andrew’s titles except for these privileges

King Charles has formally stripped Prince Andrew of all his royal titles and honours, marking a rare and decisive move by the monarch.

Buckingham Palace confirmed that the Duke of York will now be known simply as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor and will leave his Royal Lodge residence for private accommodation.

The decision comes amid increasing public pressure over Andrew’s continued occupancy of the 30-room mansion, which he reportedly rented for a “peppercorn” rate.

Despite losing his titles, Andrew retains two royal privileges. He remains eighth in line to the throne — behind Prince William, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, Prince Harry, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet — and he technically remains a Counsellor of State.

However, a 2022 law change prevents non-working royals from acting in that role, effectively barring both Andrew and the Duke of Sussex from performing official duties.

The Royal Family’s official website states: “In practice, only working Members of the Royal Family are called upon to act as Counsellors of State.”

These roles involve carrying out duties such as attending Privy Council meetings and signing official documents, though key constitutional powers cannot be delegated.

Buckingham Palace said: “His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the style, titles and honours of Prince Andrew… Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease and he will move to alternative private accommodation. These censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him.”

The move, supported by senior royals including Prince William, follows years of controversy surrounding Andrew’s association with Jeffrey Epstein.

Andrew will relocate to a private home on the King’s Sandringham estate, with his accommodation and expenses personally funded by the King. Sarah Ferguson, who lived with Andrew at Royal Lodge, will not be rehoused by Charles.
