Ben Shephard has shared a rare and touching glimpse into his private life, as he revealed that his wife Annie has been battling pneumonia, prompting the couple to slow down and retreat to the countryside for some much-needed rest.
The Ben Shephard, best known as a host on This Morning, posted a short Instagram video on Wednesday showing the pair enjoying a quiet moment surrounded by picturesque rural scenery. Filming the peaceful landscape before turning the camera on himself and Annie, Ben joked:
“20 minutes of quiet… right, I want a beer!”
But behind the light-hearted tone was a more serious revelation. In the caption, Ben explained that the walk and moment of calm came during a challenging period for the family.
“I went for a walk and sat quietly with my wife earlier,” he wrote. “(She’s been ill with pneumonia — which sounds odd to say, but the good news is she’s recovering.) But it got me wondering how long people can actually sit still doing nothing, just thinking.”
Ben went on to reflect candidly on mindfulness and meditation, admitting it doesn’t come naturally to him. “10 minutes? 20 minutes? 30 minutes? An hour? Or more? I know you can get better at it, and I like the idea of mindfulness or being present in the moment — but I don’t seem to manage more than a few minutes, if that! #failedmeditation.”
Fans rally around Annie with heartfelt messages
The post quickly attracted an outpouring of support from fans, many of whom shared personal experiences and offered reassurance as Annie continues her recovery.
“Hope Annie makes a full recovery soon — and I hope you got that beer!” one follower commented.
Another added a note of caution: “After having pneumonia and still recovering, sitting doing nothing but thinking 24 hours a day is very achievable. It took me six months to fully recover, so don’t rush it.”
A third joked warmly: “Sending lots of love to your lovely wife. Ten minutes of quiet with a gin and tonic!”
Family now Ben’s top priority
Health scares aside, Ben has been increasingly vocal about putting family first. Back in June, he announced his decision to step down as host of Goals on Sunday after nine years — a move he said was driven by a desire to spend more quality time with his two sons.
Speaking to the Mirror, Ben explained: “They’re teenagers now — Sam’s taller than me and Jack isn’t far behind, which I’m still adjusting to. They’re busy with school all week, and weekends are the only real time I get with them.”
He added: “Usually after hosting Thursday and Friday mornings, by Saturday I’m exhausted. Goals on Sunday was brilliant, but I realised not only would the whole family benefit, I would too — by being more involved in their weekend lives.”
As Annie continues to recover and Ben reshapes his work-life balance, the presenter’s latest update offers a rare, honest reminder that behind the smiles on screen, real life — and real challenges — continue quietly off camera.
