John Barrowman has shared a devastatingly emotional moment with fans, breaking down in tears as he cradled the body of his beloved dog and revealed the pet had died peacefully in his arms.

The Scottish-American actor, best known for his roles in Doctor Who and Desperate Housewives, posted a raw video on Monday in which he struggled to hold back tears while announcing the loss of his Jack Russell, Captain Jack Harkness.

Through sobs, the 58-year-old explained that his dog — named after his iconic Doctor Who character — had “waited until I got home” before passing away calmly in his arms at the age of 18.

Earlier that day, John had appeared at a fan convention and later apologised to attendees who noticed he seemed visibly distressed. He admitted he had known his beloved companion was “on his way out” and feared he might not make it home in time.

Sitting beside his husband, Scott Gill, John held Captain Jack close as he described the final moments.
“It was really difficult,” he said. “But I got home tonight and he was still with us. And he waited until I got home. I held him, we put him to bed next to me, and I held onto him. I felt his heart stop… and now he’s gone.”

Despite his grief, John expressed gratitude that his dog did not suffer and passed naturally due to old age.

“He died in my arms,” he said tearfully. “I am sad, but it is just the way I wanted it. He waited for me all day. He’s such a good boy.”
In the caption accompanying the video, the West End star paid tribute to his loyal companion of nearly two decades.
“Captain Jack Harkness, our beloved Jack Russell, has gone,” he wrote.
“He waited until I came home and died peacefully in his dada’s arms within an hour of my return, with Scott, Dixie and Tito around him. He was a good boy, a loyal friend, and our Jackamo for 18 years.”
Fans immediately flooded the comments with messages of sympathy and love.

“My thoughts are with you both. It’s heartbreaking to lose a beloved pet,” one wrote.
“He felt safe and loved right until the very end,” another added.
Several celebrities also shared their condolences, including former Dancing On Ice co-star Ashley Banjo, radio presenter Sonny Jay, Bianca Gascoigne, Perez Hilton, Coronation Street’s Daniel Brocklebank, and Big Brother star Kate Lawler, who described the video as “heartbreaking.”
Captain Jack’s name carried special meaning for fans, referencing John’s long-running role as Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who from 2005 to 2021 and as the lead in spin-off series Torchwood from 2006 to 2011.
The loss comes after a challenging period in John’s life. In recent years, he has spoken openly about struggling professionally and personally following misconduct allegations relating to his time on Doctor Who and Torchwood sets between 2005 and 2011.
John has consistently denied wrongdoing, insisting that no complaints were made at the time and that his actions were misrepresented years later. He has previously said the fallout left him “blacklisted” and battling depression.
Despite everything, fans rallied around him following the heartbreaking video — united in grief over a simple, universal loss: saying goodbye to a beloved companion.
