Earlier that day, John had appeared at a fan convention and later apologised to attendees who noticed he seemed visibly distressed. He admitted he had known his beloved companion was “on his way out” and feared he might not make it home in time.

Sitting beside his husband, Scott Gill, John held Captain Jack close as he described the final moments.

“It was really difficult,” he said. “But I got home tonight and he was still with us. And he waited until I got home. I held him, we put him to bed next to me, and I held onto him. I felt his heart stop… and now he’s gone.”

The loss comes after a challenging period in John’s life. In recent years, he has spoken openly about struggling professionally and personally following misconduct allegations relating to his time on Doctor Who and Torchwood sets between 2005 and 2011.

John has consistently denied wrongdoing, insisting that no complaints were made at the time and that his actions were misrepresented years later. He has previously said the fallout left him “blacklisted” and battling depression.

Despite everything, fans rallied around him following the heartbreaking video — united in grief over a simple, universal loss: saying goodbye to a beloved companion.
