Coronation Street stars Sydney Martin and Liam McCheyne have spoken out about filming an incredibly powerful storyline for Betsy Swain after tonight episode earned huge praise from viewers.
Sydney and Dylan have been navigating a long distance relationship and taking first steps into intimacy together as their young romance blossoms. In tonight episode the couple spent the night together but a request to be strangled during consensual sex led to a medical emergency when Betsy suffered a stroke that impaired her language skills.
In a video shared on social media after the episode aired the two actors discussed the creative sequence Corrie used to give viewers an insight into Betsy mind in the aftermath.
Sydney Martin On Teen Love Hormones And Night That Changes Everything
Martin described the build up to the incident as two teenagers trying to figure out a long distance relationship. Obviously with that comes hormones little bickers and we see them make up spend the night together she explained about the moments leading to the consensual strangulation.
The next day we see an ambulance outside Number Six to find Betsy in hospital where ultimately she has suffered a stroke from consensual strangulation she continued.
Expressive Aphasia Dance Sequence And Why Corrie Used Movement To Tell Intimate Story
In the aftermath of the stroke Betsy wakes up with expressive aphasia a language disorder that affects the ability to form coherent sentences or find the right words even though the person knows exactly what they want to communicate.
Because of the condition Betsy struggles to find the word for sex and ends up saying dance instead and Coronation Street chose to incorporate a contemporary dance sequence to reenact the intimate encounter between her and Dylan.
The writing team came up with the idea that dance is a way to represent something so intimate and innocent at the same time Martin said.
McCheyne also praised the inventive and deeply moving scene saying the way that you tell a story through movement was something we found quite powerful.
I think it will have a huge impact he added.
Martin has previously spoken about learning just how dangerous strangulation during sex can be and about how the soap will continue to portray Betsy post stroke state going forward as she navigates recovery communication and young love.
