Speaking candidly on The RHS Roots Podcast with Jo Whiley, she admitted: “I can’t see now,” explaining how AMD has forced her to give up driving, reading, and even hobbies she once loved, like embroidery.
Despite these challenges, Judi’s passion for her craft remains undimmed. She told the podcast: “I could do the whole of Twelfth Night or A Midsummer Night’s Dream for you now,” highlighting her enduring love for Shakespeare. Her deteriorating eyesight has also strengthened her connection with poetry: “I still try to learn more sonnets… there’s so much to learn.”
Judi also opened up about her memory struggles, saying: “I can’t remember what I’m doing tomorrow, I swear to you,” yet she retains the ability to recall Shakespearean lines with ease—a testament to her remarkable mental agility and lifelong devotion to acting.
Her story is a powerful reminder of resilience, determination, and grace. Though her vision may be fading, Dame Judi Dench continues to inspire millions, showing that passion and love for one’s art can endure even in the face of life’s greatest challenges.
