Netflix is getting romantic with a new adaptation of The Bodyguard, and this one’s an adaptation of Katherine Center’s best-seller instead of the 1992 hit. Netflix has officially announced its leads as Jared Padalecki and Leighton Meester, and fans can’t help but make a fuss over the casting.
But fans had better set their expectations, as iconic as The Bodyguard starring Whitney Houston was, Netflix would take in a whole different approach to the story, one that’ll be more accurate and more loyal to the source material, making the film lean in to more of the rom-com side of things that Katherine Center intended in her book, The Bodyguard.
A Different Version Of The Bodyguard
Unlike the Whitney Houston-Kevin Costner thriller, this Bodyguard is a romantic comedy with a twist for the times. The story centers on megastar Jack (Padalecki), who hires a bodyguard (Meester) after he becomes a target for a stalker. When Jack heads back to his family’s ranch for the holidays, he convinces his newest protector to pass as his girlfriend, a ruse that soon makes a mess of the distinction between duty and desire.
Though so far, the biggest and only notable change in the film that’ll differ from the novel is that instead of the story taking place in Texas, it’ll instead happen in Montana. There might also be a few minor changes in the film compared to the source material, but that’s only to adjust the story, shifting from one form of media to another.
Jared Padalecki and Leighton Meester Take Center Stage
This film marks Padalecki’s first motion picture role since a decade-long stint on Supernatural and Walker. While Meester is well-known for her role as Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl, with these actors’ charisma and talent, it gives the fans a promising and intriguing chemistry that audiences can’t help but wait for. Together, their respective castings give an air that this is going to be a nostalgic yet new pairing where both leads get back in the romantic fold.

Production on the film starts December 3, 2025, right after the pre-production that’s been ongoing since September 22, 2025. Once the filming process begins, it’ll take a few weeks to a couple of months to finish, and only then, we might expect to hear more news about it, like release dates, teasers, and trailers.
