With sharp dialogue, intricate plot twists and a detective who can seemingly read minds, The Mentalist proved to be one of television’s most captivating series during its original run – and its arrival on the streaming giant has reignited enthusiasm for the show.

The series stars Simon Baker as Patrick Jane, a former psychic conman turned consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation.

Armed with extraordinary observational skills, Patrick helps Agent Teresa Lisbon and her team solve complex cases while relentlessly hunting down his nemesis, the elusive serial killer Red John.

First airing on CBS in 2008, the series immediately struck a chord with audiences, drawing an impressive 17 million viewers during its debut season.

Its mix of stand-alone mysteries and a darker long-running arc earned comparisons to a modern-day Sherlock Holmes, with Jane’s uncanny ability to read people setting him apart from other television detectives.

Across seven seasons and 151 episodes, The Mentalist maintained a loyal fan base. It was later broadcast in the UK on Channel 5, before coming to an end in 2015 with its finale drawing 11 million viewers.

Despite declining ratings towards its conclusion, the show has remained a firm favourite with audiences worldwide, recently celebrating its 17th anniversary on September 23.

Its availability on Prime Video has delighted long-time fans while also introducing the series to new viewers.

One reviewer praised it as a ‘brilliant series about crime and investigation involving the homicides, the serial killing that the CBI handles, and of course The Mentalist’s way of catching the killer every time which is very unique in all the episodes.

They continued: ‘Excellent performance by Patrick Jane, Teresa Lisbon, Kimball Cho, Wayne Rigsby, Grace van Pelt, Red John and all of them in each and every season.’

Another wrote: ‘I don’t normally write reviews but I have to for this gem. First of all, if you’re in a dilemma of deciding whether to watch it or not then put your doubts aside and give it a go, you will not regret it. This is one of the best shows I have ever seen.’

One fan was even more emphatic, declaring: ‘Hands down the best show I have ever watched, and I have watched quite a few shows in my lifetime.

‘Each and every one of the actors are terrific, but a special mention is surely deserved by the charming, suave, dashing, breathtakingly handsome, with an infectious smile that lights up the room… Simon Baker.’

Baker’s performance as the enigmatic Jane was widely acclaimed, earning him an Emmy nomination, following an earlier Golden Globe nomination for his role in The Guardian.

Since the series ended, he has appeared in films including Breath and Blaze, and most recently starred in BBC drama Ten Pound Poms.
