For Katie Piper, the decision wasn’t about choice — it was about circumstance.
The presenter and campaigner has spoken candidly about the painful health setback that ultimately meant she could not have a third child with her husband, Richard Sutton, quietly admitting: “That scuppered that.”
A Hope Reignited — Then Taken Away
Katie, who is already a devoted mum to daughters Belle, 11, and Penelope, eight, revealed that the desire for another baby returned a few years ago, at a deeply emotional point in her life.
While filming her 2023 documentary Katie Piper’s Jailhouse Mums in the United States, she spent time speaking to imprisoned mothers separated from their children — conversations that stayed with her long after filming ended.
“It made me think, this might be my last chance,” Katie previously said. “I was approaching 40, and I thought, if I don’t try now, I never will.”
She and Richard made the decision together — and they began trying.
The Medical Crisis That Changed Everything
But plans for another baby were abruptly derailed when Katie suffered a serious medical setback.
She was forced to undergo emergency surgery on her eye, which had been damaged during the acid attack she survived in 2008 — an injury that has required ongoing medical care for more than a decade.
“You can’t be trying for a baby while also dealing with unexpected surgeries,” Katie explained.
“So that scuppered that. We had to stop.”
The couple later tried again — but it simply didn’t happen.
Why IVF Wasn’t an Option
Katie also revealed she considered IVF, but ultimately decided against it.
After enduring more than 250 operations since her attack, she admitted she could not face more hospital treatment — or the emotional strain that comes with fertility procedures if they don’t succeed.
It was a quiet, devastating acceptance: the dream of a third child was no longer possible.
Finding Healing in a Different Way
Yet even as one chapter closed, Katie found another way to open her heart.
Feeling that something was still missing, she began volunteering at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home — where she and her family adopted a dog named Sugar.
Sharing the news online, Katie wrote that her daughters had long wished for a brother or sister — and while that dream couldn’t come true in the way they hoped, their family still found a way to grow.
“We have expanded our family,” she said. “And we are so happy to make our home, her new home.”
