Prue Leith has become a much-loved national figure since joining The Great British Bake Off in 2017, following the programme’s move from the BBC to Channel 4.

Now aged 85, the Dame stepped into the role previously held by Mary Berry, judging alongside Paul Hollywood — and quickly won viewers over with her warmth, honesty and unmistakable style.

But after nearly a decade on the show, Prue has begun to speak more openly about ageing, declining health, and the sobering realisation that she may be nearing the final chapter of her life.

‘Age Stinks’: Facing the Reality of Getting Older

At the start of the year, Prue spoke candidly during an appearance on Loose Women, admitting that everyday life has become more challenging.Prue Leith warns she 'hasn't got much longer' as she soaks up time with TV star husband - The Mirror

“Age stinks,” she said bluntly. “Come on, it takes me 10 minutes to get myself out of bed in the morning. If I don’t do my exercises, I can’t move.”

While the admission was raw, Prue explained that being increasingly aware of her mortality hasn’t filled her with despair — instead, it has sharpened her determination to enjoy life while she can.

“There are all sorts of things that are wrong with old age,” she reflected. “You’re very conscious that this is nearly the end. You then decide that you’re going to make the most of it and have fun.”

When the Body Won’t Do What It Used To

One of the most painful parts of ageing, Prue has said, is the growing fragility of the body — and its reduced ability to fight off illnesses that once barely registered.

In April, she spoke openly about the limitations she now faces, particularly when it comes to gardening, a passion that has followed her since childhood.

Speaking to The Telegraph, she said:
“We’ve got a new potting shed and greenhouse and I’m thrilled. It’s full of plants I had in childhood in South Africa, like bright bougainvillaea.”Prue Leith finally addresses why she and husband John Playfair didn't live together after marriage - OK! Magazine

However, she admitted she can no longer be as physically involved as she would like.
“I like propagating because my back hurts and I can do it on a high stool,” she explained. “I’m not as hands-on as I’d like because I’m no longer able to be. I find it vaguely surprising I can’t do certain things any longer.”

Despite these challenges, Prue has found ways to manage her health, including being careful about her diet — though she admits this isn’t always easy.

Earlier this year, she revealed that there are certain foods she struggles to resist, joking that she sometimes becomes “furious” when her husband John Playfair brings her snacks.

“My husband John is naughty,” she told The Telegraph. “He’ll bring me tea and yoghurt and I’ll be furious because I won’t be able to resist eating it.

“I don’t usually have breakfast as it’s about the only food I can resist, and I have a problem keeping my weight remotely down.”

Choosing Love Over Everything Else

Prue has been married to John since 2016, and as she enters her mid-80s, she has made it clear that spending time with him is now her greatest priority.

Speaking on Holly Rubenstein’s podcast The Travel Diaries, Prue said she wants to cherish her remaining years with her husband — valuing companionship, laughter and shared moments over professional ambition.

Though she remains active on Bake Off for now, her recent comments have prompted fans to wonder how long she will continue — and whether she is quietly preparing for a slower, more private life.

What remains clear is that Prue Leith is facing ageing not with denial, but with honesty, humour and a fierce determination to live fully — even as her body gently reminds her of life’s limits.
