Yorkshire Shepherdess Amanda Owen has revealed the one question she’s constantly asked by fans – and her honest answer that never fails to leave them stunned.
Appearing on James Martin’s Saturday Morning, the 51-year-old farmer opened up about the realities of agricultural life at Ravenseat Farm in the Yorkshire Dales, where she raises her nine children – Raven, Reuben, Miles, Edith, Violet, Sidney, Annas, Clementine, and Nancy – alongside her ex-husband Clive.

When asked about her biggest surprise since starting farm life, Amanda admitted: “I think the biggest shock, really, has been how you can put so much of your life and soul into something and yet it’s still misunderstood. People look at the fields and have no idea what they’re actually seeing.”
She then revealed the question that always comes her way: “People often ask, ‘Do you eat your own animals?’ and I say, ‘Yes.’ And they’re always quite surprised. But how could I expect people to have confidence in what’s on their plate if I didn’t have that same confidence myself?”

Amanda reflected on how her urban upbringing made her farming journey even more remarkable. “I’m Huddersfield born and bred – definitely not countryside at all,” she laughed. “Maybe my goth phase was my teenage rebellion, and when I realised everyone else was doing the same, I thought, ‘How else can I rebel?’ So I headed for the wilds, into the hills.”
During the show, Amanda also discussed her latest book, Christmas Tales From The Farm, and shared how her daily life continues to inspire her writing. Though Our Yorkshire Farm ended in 2022 following her separation from Clive, Amanda and her children are back on screens with their new series Our Farm Next Door, which follows their mission to restore a historic farmhouse in the Dales.
With her trademark humour and honesty, Amanda proved once again why fans remain captivated by her life among the hills — unfiltered, authentic, and always ready to challenge expectations.
