No one saw this coming. After decades of charming British audiences with his sharp wit and understated brilliance, Doc Martin legend Martin Clunes is crossing the Atlantic — and fans are torn. Fox’s daring new remake, Best Medicine, promises to give the beloved character a modern, American twist that could either make or break the legacy Clunes built. Some call it genius. Others call it betrayal. But one thing’s certain — when the first episode drops, everyone will be watching to see if lightning can strike twice. See more below

Martin Clunes, who starred in Doc Martin for 10 seasons across 18 years for British broadcaster ITV, is joining the U.S. remake of the drama.

Fox is launching Best Medicine, an adaptation of the long-running medical comedy drama, in midseason. Josh Charles plays Martin Best, based on the character Clunes played in the original, and Clunes will play his father (despite being only nine years older than him in real life).
Best Medicine is a one-hour series that follows Martin, a brilliant surgeon who abruptly leaves his illustrious career in Boston to become the general practitioner in a quaint East Coast fishing village where he spent summers as a child. Unfortunately, his blunt and borderline rude bedside manner rubs the quirky, needy locals the wrong way, and he quickly alienates the town, even though he’s all they’ve got.
Clunes plays Dr. Robert Best, an accomplished, headstrong gastroenterologist whose abrasive demeanor makes Martin look practically cozy by comparison.
Estranged from his sister Sarah (Annie Potts), Robert’s surprise visit to Port Wenn puts everyone on edge. But underneath his snobby, stone-cold exterior, he’s hiding a few secrets of his own that could turn Martin’s new life upside down and force him to confront his past.
Abigail Spencer, Josh Segarra and Cree also star.

Best Medicine is produced by Fox Entertainment Studios and executiveproduced by Ben Silverman, Rodney Ferrell, Howard T. Owens, Liz Tuccillo, Mark Crowdy and Philippa Braithwaite. The series is distributed worldwide by Fox Entertainment Global. All3Media International’s Doc Martin was produced in the UK by Buffalo Pictures in association with Homerun Film Productions and brought to American audiences by Propagate Content.
